In Need of A Fresh Layer of Paint?
A layer of paint on a bathroom ceiling will typically last about 10 years before the paint starts peeling. You may begin to notice cracks and peeling in your paint around this 10-year mark. If you notice that your paint is easily chipping off the bathroom walls and ceilings, then your next step is to gather the supplies necessary to begin the re-painting process. But before you can begin to paint, you should start your research by reading on to learn how to stop bathroom ceiling paint peeling.
Supplies You’ll Need
The following supplies list is recommended if you plan to remove and paint over peeling paint. Because you will be working with old paint that may chip away into small dust particles, you are advised to take precautions by wearing goggles and a dust mask. In addition, we are recommending that you use oil-based paint for your re-painting because this type of paint does not chip. Here are the following items you need to gather before you begin:
- Dust mask– protects your lungs/nose/mouth
- Goggles- protects your eyes
- Oil-based primer
- Oil-based paints
- Putty knife
- Patching compound
- Paint scraper
- Paintbrush- for tight spots
- Paint roller- for larger areas
- Fine-grit sandpaper
Step 1: Remove Peeling Paint
To remove the layer of old peeling paint, you will first use your paint scraper and remove large paint chips. This will take care of the majority of paint on your wall.
Step 2: Apply Patching Compound
Now that you have a bare wall ready, it is time to apply your patching compound with a putty knife. This will fill in any cracks and holes that your wall will most likely have after many years. It is a good idea to keep your exhaust fan running in your bathroom during this time, and especially when you begin the painting process to help air out fumes.
Step 3: Sand, Prepare, and Prime
After applying your patching compound, you will need to have your fine-grit sandpaper handy. Sand down the area in circular motions. After you have removed the paint and excess patching compound, take extra care that the area is smooth and even. Next, apply your primer. The primer will help your paint layer stick to the wall better, and will also help to prevent mildew and watermarks.
Step 4: Paint Your Ceiling
Once you have your type of paint picked out and your primer is dry, you can finally begin painting. Again, we recommend using oil paint as it does not peel or flake like acrylic-based paints are known to do. We also recommend that you cover electrical outlets and switches with masking tape, and cover the floor with newspaper to protect it from paint. This is especially important when painting a ceiling, because gravity may cause some paint to drip down to the floor.
