Pro Painters, your Houston painting contractor, has been painting a lot of cabinets due to Hurricane Harvey so we have cabinets on the brain. You might want to apply a new color to your cabinets or handle them yourself so here are our suggestions on how to tackle the job.
Remove Hardware
First, you will want to remove the cabinet doors and the hardware. You want to have clear access to everything before you start working.
Clean and Prime
Next, you will cleanse the cabinets with a degreaser to remove any grease or oil that has built up over time. Then, apply a test sample of Extreme Bond Primer in a non obvious area. This primer provides excellent cover and adhesion and is easy to use. You want to test it for adhesion to see if sanding is necessary or not for your surface. Once the adhesion has been assessed you can prime the whole area. You want to make sure it has proper adhesion and cleaning so that you prolong the length of time your job lasts. Use a quality wood filler/putty to patch any holes.
Sand the Area
After 24 hours passes and the surface has dried, sand it again with a ?very fine? grit sandpaper. Following this step, smooth out the primer coat and wipe the primed cabinets with a damp cloth to remove debris before applying the first coat of paint.
Paint the Area
Take a 1? or 1.5? angled brush and apply a coat of paint to the recessed or detailed spots of the cabinet door first. Try to avoid brush marks on the smoother or flatter areas. Next, paint the remaining flat areas immediately with a mini roller. Then, gently roll over any overlapping brush marks or paint drips to smooth them out.
Let the Area Dry
Let your first coat dry for 24-48 hours before applying the second coat the same way as the first. After another 24-48 hours has passed you can then reinstall your hardware or add a new one.
