Painted Faux Molding vs. Wooden Crown Molding
If you are looking to update a room or your whole house, you might have considered installing crown molding. While crown molding gives any room a polished look, it can be expensive, especially if you want more ornamental crown molding. It?s also very time consuming to install yourself. Besides the crown molding, you will need a mitre saw, a caulking gun, and paint. You will also need to enlist the help of a family member or friend to help you put it up. On the other hand, painted faux, or fake molding, is relatively easy to execute. All you need is paint, painters tape, and a ruler to measure how far down you want your molding to go on the wall. You can probably paint faux molding by yourself, too.
Get Ready to Paint
If you are attempting painted faux molding for the first time, start with one room. If you aren?t thrilled about the paint color of the room, now is the perfect time to change it. Pick a color that will stand out against the faux molding. Most people choose a shade of white for their faux molding, so any color that creates enough of a contrast will look good. After you have painted the room, now it?s time to tackle the molding. First, choose a height for your molding. Since you won?t have the sculptural silhouette of real crown molding, you might want to go a little thicker with the height. We recommend six to eight inches from the ceiling. Next, make straight marks with chalk or a pencil on the wall at the height you decide on every few feet around the room. Then you can follow the marks on the wall with painter?s tape. Make sure to keep an eye on where you put the tape so that it stays straight.
Time to Paint
When it?s time to paint, a recommended technique would be to apply the first coat by cutting in around the ceiling, corners, and tape line with a 1 ? inch angled brush. Next, fill in the remaining space with a 4 ? inch roller. As long as your ceilings are white, any bleeding from the roller technique shouldn?t be a problem and should blend right into the ceiling. For the second coat, you can probably skip the cutting technique with a brush and just use the roller again.
The Reveal
After about an hour of letting the paint dry, peel back a corner of the painter?s tape to make sure it looks how you want it. If you are pleased with the results, continue peeling the rest of the painter?s tape off the wall and marvel at your new faux molding. After this successful attempt, you may want to try painted faux molding in all the rooms of your house.
