The new year is on its way and you may have some Houston interior painting you want done to freshen up your living or working space. Good news! Sherwin Williams announced that in 2016 they are releasing a paint which can actually kill bacteria! It?s called Paint Shield Interior Latex Microbicidal Paint. You may ask why this is important. It matters because stopping this bacteria on painted surfaces helps prevent the spread of bacteria that causes hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). Within just two hours it can kill 99.9% of Staphylococcus aureus, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Vancomycin-resistant- Enterococcus faecalis, and Enterobacter aerogenes. Believe it or not, these infections are one of the top causes of preventable deaths in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. But worse than that, 1 in every 25 U.S. patients contracts one or more infections during the course of their hospital stay, notes the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

?Paint Shield is one of the most significant technological breakthroughs in our nearly 150 year history of innovation,? says Chris Connor, chairman and chief executive of Sherwin Williams. ?By killing infectious pathogens on painted surfaces, Paint Shield is a game-changing advancement in coatings technology.?

Steve Revnew, senior vice president of Product Innovation for Sherwin Williams, says ?Continued progress in combating HAIs will require a broad array of measures, including passive methods that are less dependent on human intervention. By continuing to kill MSRA and other bacteria, even after repeated contamination, Paint Shield offers hospitals and other facilities an important new tool to help in the fight against the spread of HAIs.?

The best part about this innovative new paint is that the EPA-test protocol showed that so long as the integrity of the surface is kept up, effectiveness will last up to 4 years! It works not only by inhibiting the growth of common microbes, but killing the infectious bacteria itself. It can be applied on interior hard, non-porous walls, ceilings, doors, and trim. This will work best in schools, hospitals, daycares, cruise ships, athletic facilities, and other healthcare facilities, but you can even use it in your home or office building, if you like. What a great way to protect your family from the dangers of these illnesses!

Sherwin Williams will be making Paint Shield ready for distribution in the first quarter of next year in around about 590 colors. They will even make it in the eggshell finish, which everyone loves. It is durable and coats with quality, like any other Sherwin Williams product. It sounds like the extensive research between the coatings scientists and expert microbiologists payed off!
