The first thing you need to do is properly clean the cabinets. This can be easily done with a ? cup of trisodium phosphate solution (TSP) mixed with a gallon of water. Next, while wearing thick plastic gloves, degrease the cabinets and their surrounding areas with a thick rag. Once properly cleaned, use a sponge dipped in fresh water to remove the residual TSP.
After you feel the cabinets are free of dirt, grease, and grime, gently unscrew the hinges of the cabinet doors so they can be removed and put aside. The drawers will also need to be pulled out during this process. Now lightly sand the front faces of the drawers, doors, and cabinet surfaces with a 220 grit sandpaper to ensure that the paint will adhere properly. Once done, just wipe off the excess dust and begin protecting the outside edges of your work area.
On the ceilings, floor, and walls you need to use painter?s tape to protect the areas you don?t want painted. After you feel these areas are well covered, you can now begin applying a basecoat to the cabinets using a Sherwin Williams Proclassic enamel. In difficult corners, use a high quality paint brush, but for long stretches, it?s best to use a mini roller. This same process should also be applied to the outer faces of your drawers and cabinet doors. For now, avoid painting the center panels of the cabinets. In order for this to be done, you must mark off with painter?s tape on each shelf?s edge to make sure the colors don?t run together. Next, just let it dry and apply a second coat if needed.
Once your paint has dried, you can now begin preparing your glazing cream. It?s good to always use 6 ounces of Coffee Bean glazing cream for every quart of Furniture and Cabinetry glazing cream. Mix well and then begin applying with a brush as well as a 4-inch chip brush for the edges. While still wet, use some bunched up cheesecloth to gently sweep the glaze in the direction of the grain, this is key because it will help fortify the richness of each tone. Let it dry and then carefully remove the painter?s tape to ensure you do not pull up any paint. Once done, all that?s left to do is replace your drawers and cabinet doors!
