If you haven’t noticed, the groovy styles of the 70s are making a big comeback! Their sharp patterns and neutral colors can offer a calming yet dynamic presence to any home decor. Today we will discuss how to make one of these aesthetically pleasing designs with just a few household items. Not only will it bring about a fresh new creative decor, this painting process can be a fun and even therapeutic experience for the entire family. As with most painting projects, you should begin by properly cleaning the surface you?re working with. Then, with painter?s tape, take some time to mark off the areas you don’t wish to be painted. Once done, trace the singular pattern image provided onto a piece of cardboard, cut it out, and then begin tracing its outline onto the wall. It may take some time to plan out the placement of each piece, just keep in mind that your overall traced design should match the fully patterned image provided. Once you have lightly traced your outline, begin using painter?s tape to mark off the edges of a checkered portion of the pattern. It?s best to think of the desired pattern as an enlarged and abstract chess board with alternating colors. With this image in mind, your first painted color will only cover a checkered portion of the overall design and the painter?s tape can then be applied accordingly with that discerned motif. To help produce those desired clean crisp lines, the tape must lay flat with its edges sharply connected. After you have the tape just right, you can now begin applying the first coat of paint.

After a 24 hour period, the paint should be dry enough for the painter?s tape to be carefully removed. Once this is done, you can now repeat the same processes as before, but on the alternate shapes of the pattern. Once again, pay careful attention that the tape edges to yield a crisp painted finish. When applying the second coat, it is best to use an alternate complementary hue to generate the desired aesthetic of a 70s revival pattern. After the second color has dried, you can now remove the remaining painter?s tape to reveal the finished design.

This is not only a fun and cheap exercise, it can bring about a whole new inspirational theme throughout your home! For more creative or helpful painting tutorials, check out our other weekly blogs or contact a Houston Painting Contractor for more information!
