Exterior Paints That Last

After all the rain we?ve had so far this year, now is a better time than ever to emphasize how important a good exterior paint job is. The prep work counts for a lot, but beyond that, the coating needs to be superb as well. Below, five painting professionals give their go-to products and explain why they are the best.

Terry Begue, of Begue Painting, Inc., sprays Sherwin-Williams? Duration Exterior Acrylic Coating in satin on his prepped surfaces. He claims that this one only requires one coat whereas they were using two before to get the job done. He has stuck with this product for 15 years and has never had a homeowner complain about it, but Sherwin williams will replace it if any peeling or blistering does occur. Also, he suggests Sherwin-Williams? Woodscapes Exterior House Stain for cedar projects because it?s peel resistant and has a nice rich color.

Jeff Sommers owns ESP Painting and swears by Sherwin-Williams? SuperPaint Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint since it is easy to spray, brush, and roll. He says ?It?s the best bang for your buck,? but for higher-end projects he prefers Benjamin Moore?s Aura Exterior Paint.

Kristopher Toth suggests Sherwin Williams? Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint for new-wood projects and fiber-cement siding. Most frequently, he also uses their Super Paint Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint, because it works on many different surfaces and bonds directly to the siding. This is our favorite paint selection at Pro Painters, too, for tricky commercial projects.

Behr Premium Plus Ultra Exterior Satin Enamel Paint is the pick of Ken Byrd from American Paint Company, due to it being even better after California raised their green building standards in 2013 and all of the paint had to have low VOCs. This particular paint boasts resistance to moisture, fading, and stains.

Ron Ramsden who focuses on residential painting with Ramsden Painting prefers California Paints? 2010 100% Acrylic Exterior Paint for remodeling old homes because they recreate the exact colors of what was used in New England back in the day. However, for newer homes they stick with Benjamin Moore?s Regal Select Exterior Paint and Sherwin-Williams? Resilience Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint. ?I like that it dries quickly and has some flexibility to it,? Ron says. ?It?s a beautiful product.?
